Why Your Photos Look Soft: Motion Blur vs. Missed Focus vs. Diffraction

Soft photos almost always trace to one of three causes: motion blur, missed focus, or diffraction. Each looks different at 100% and needs a different fix — telling them apart takes a two-second glance at the crop. Chasing the wrong culprit is the costliest mistake in photography.

The single fastest test: is anything in the frame sharp? With missed focus, something is crisp — just not your subject. The ear is sharp while the eye is soft; the background is crisp while the flower is mush. There’s a sharp plane in the image; it just landed in the wrong place. With motion blur, nothing is truly sharp, and the softness has a direction — everything smears the same way, like the whole scene was dragged sideways a few pixels.

Diffraction is the third signature: uniformly, gently soft across the entire frame with no smear and no sharp plane anywhere. It looks like a faint veil over an otherwise well-focused image, low on micro-contrast but not directional. Motion blur has a direction. Point light sources — streetlights, catchlights, specular highlights — turn into short streaks instead of points, and they all streak the same way if it’s camera shake, or in different directions if it’s subject motion within a static frame. The give-away is that the in-focus plane smears too: even the thing you nailed focus on isn’t crisp, because the whole projected image slid during the exposure.

The fix depends on the source. What Does Diffraction Look Like — and How Do You Fix It?

Diffraction is the veil. When you stop the aperture down to a very small opening — past about f/11 on APS-C or f/16 on full-frame — light waves bend around the edges of the aperture blades and spread each point of the image into a slightly larger disc, softening the entire frame uniformly. There’s no smear and no misplaced sharp plane; the whole image just loses bite and micro-contrast, like someone turned the clarity down a notch. It’s most obvious when you compare the same scene shot at f/8 and f/22 side by side.

The fix is simple: open the aperture back up to the lens’s sharp zone, usually f/5.6 to f/8. The only reason to stop down past the diffraction point is when you genuinely need the extra depth of field more than the extra bite — a macro shot or a near-far landscape — and then it’s a deliberate trade, not an accident. Could It Be the Lens, Not You?

Sometimes it genuinely is the glass — but far less often than gear forums claim. A decentered or badly assembled copy will be sharp on one side of the frame and soft on the other at the same focus distance, a lopsided asymmetry you’ll never get from technique. Field curvature can leave the center sharp and the corners soft even at the sweet-spot aperture, because the lens’s focal surface is dished rather than flat. And a cheap or mismatched lens simply may not resolve what your sensor demands.

But before you blame the lens, chart it. Lock the camera on a tripod, shoot a flat target at every aperture, and look for the pattern: uniform softness that clears when you stop down is diffraction or wide-open softness (normal); one-sided softness that never clears is a bad copy (return it).
